"It all began in 1864, when John Lewis opened his first shop on Oxford Street.
The first day's takings were 16 shillings and fourpence!
Since the first shop in Oxford Street opened 140 years ago John Lewis has grown to over 63,000 employees, running 27 department stores and 166 Waitrose food shops with a turnover exceeding £5 billion a year.
The John Lewis Partnership is one of the UK's top ten retail businesses with 27 John Lewis department stores and 173 Waitrose supermarkets.

Waitrose combines the convenience of a supermarket with the expertise and service of a specialist shop. Waitrose was the first ever winner of the title Organic Supermarket of the Year and has won the accolade Which? Supermarket Wine Merchant of the Year for seven years out of a possible eleven.
