Christmas Presents
If you feel that buying Christmas presents is a chore this could be the page for you. We have vast experience in buying xmas presents, as we are from large families. We will help you to budget for Christmas, rather than overloading the credit cards.
We will also provide you with a selection of links, which may help you to buy those prezzies for the more awkward relatives. There may even be help with stocking items, you'll just have to read on!
The first thing to do is write a list. Write down who you usually buy gifts for and any new additions in family or friends. We don't mean to be morbid, but you'll also need to consider who is no longer with us. Was there anyone who you forgot last year and who bought for you? We'll not go on, as you get the general idea. However, our top tip is that you keep the previous year's list in a safe place to make the job easier.
Decide on a realistic budget for each person, but do not make your total xmas budget too rigid. You may save money on some items and have to spend a little more on others, but as long as you have a rough budget you shouldn't go far wrong. It would be folly to say "I'm only spending £200 on Christmas presents this year" only to find that half of the names on your list had no present - be sensible!
Try not to buy the same presents each year. There is no fun in getting a circular parcel from Aunt Flo each year, as you know it's biscuits! Think about the person, what do they like? Where do they like to shop? If you talk to your friends and relatives the choice can be narrowed.
It's better to give someone what they really want, than spend lots of money on something they don't. Here's an extreme example - If you spent £80,000 on buying me a new Porsche, I would be flattered and pleased. However, if you spent £40,000 on a second hand Ferrari I'd be delighted and your best pal for life - I prefer Ferraris. Therefore, you could have saved 50 per cent on my present and made me much happier with the second car. (By the way I don't own a Ferrari, so if you do feel the urge to buy me one - please feel free!)
Gift vouchers or tokens are much better than money, as they show more thought. They show that you know where the person likes to shop. However, make sure they are from the right shop - just because you like buying your pants from there does not mean that they do!
Perhaps the best tip we can give you is to buy presents all year round! Get a big box and as you see things for people, buy them and put them in the box. We actually buy some Christmas presents in the January sales. Are you mad? We hear you say - no just sensible! We have five siblings to buy for and eachother. Our siblings have nine children and we have our own. It does not take a genius to realise it's better to spread the cost than to have to take out a loan to pay for Christmas!
Are you artistic? Can you make any of the cards or gifts yourself? Last year I got a beautiful handmade card from my friend Vicky Long. I was really touched that someone had bothered to make a card for me. Making items for people gives that personal touch and will certainly create an impression.
